James T. Farrell was born to Irish working-class parents. He attended the University of Chicago, where he began his prolific writing career. His enormous ouvre includes the realist trilogy "Studs Lonigan," set in Chicago and considered one of the best works of the 20th century. Farrell was also an avid baseball fan and political activist.
