John Joseph Gunther attended Chicago public schools before becoming a writer. Gunther traveled to Europe for the Chicago Daily News. He wrote that he spent this time immersed in “the whole extraordinary panorama of Europe from 1924 to 1936.” He wrote Inside Europe, one in a geography-based Inside series, which was an international success. His other subjects included Adolf Hitler, Asia, Latin America, Africa, and several American presidents. His lasting legacy is a memoir, "Death Be Not Proud."
